Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity

The Illinois Public Health Institute has joined with a number of other groups to launch the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity. IAPO works for policy and health solutions to combat obesity.

MAINTAIN (Medicines Assistance for Those Who Are in Need)

MAINTAIN is a program designed to help recently unemployed Americans and their families who have lost their insurance and who are taking Pfizer medicines to continue treatment at no cost for up to one year. The program is open for enrollment through December 31, 2009 and applies to eligible Americans who have become unemployed since January 1, 2009.

Patients who qualify will receive their Pfizer medicines at no cost for up to 12 months or until they become re-insured (whichever occurs first). Over 70 Pfizer primary care medicines will be available through the program. To make it easy for people to apply, the program has been integrated into Pfizer’s existing family of patient assistance programs called Pfizer Helpful Answers.

Friedman Place

Friedman Place is a non-profit Supportive Living Community for blind and visually impaired adults in Chicago. The building has been designed with the needs of the blind and visually impaired in mind. Each resident has a private studio or one-bedroom apartment, with a kitchenette and bathroom. A full range of services and activities is provided so that residents’ days are healthy, dignified, and stimulating.  Guide dogs are welcome.



The Gilead Outreach and Referral Center

The Gilead Center is a not-for-profit organization that connects low-income uninsured and under-insured individuals and families throughout the metropolitan Chicago with affordable healthcare programs for which they are eligible. The Gilead Center operates throughout the Chicago Metropolitan area and has connected more than 89,000 individuals with health care programs.

The Night Ministry

The Night Ministry is a non-denominational, non-profit organization that provides health services, youth housing and parenting programs. Their healthcare outreach services include healthcare by nurse practitioners and registered nurses, HIV/AIDS prevention and testing, social service referrals, and support. Coffee, hygiene kits, new socks, warm winter wear, cookies, cocoa, condoms and more are offered by the Health Outreach Bus that travels to six Chicago neighborhoods from 7-11:30 pm, Monday-Saturday, on a regular schedule all year.

WIC Program

The goal of the WIC program is to provide federal grants to states for food, healthcare information, and nutritional education for low-income pregnant women.  It also provides services for postpartum women and children up to five years of age who are at a nutritional disadvantage.  Before any of these services are distributed you must meet the low-income level requirements that are set by the USDA in order to qualify.
